Phonemic Awareness
The student will begin learning how to identify, isolate and discern the smallest units of sound within a word. AN ESSENTIAL SKILL FOR READING SUCCESS!
Phonics!
The student will learn how to identify, recall, and pronounce the 13 most common graphemes and phonemes in English print AND learn how to blend them to create words!
Fluency Development
The student will learn how to "pencil read", grapheme by grapheme, so they can read with accuracy. There are also several activities and games to strengthen and develop their fluency.

Phonemic Awareness
It is imperative that phonemic awareness be established prior to—and developed throughout—any reading acquisition program. You will learn what phonemic awareness is and how to provide it!
The First 13 Graphemes
Many well-meaning teachers and parents inadvertently teach incorrect sounds of letters and digraphs, which makes decoding even more difficult for struggling readers! It is critical that the corrects sounds are taught. The student will learn how to pronounce the TRUE sounds of the first 13 (most common) letters to eliminate future confusion.
Read 2-6 sound words!
The student will begin blending (pushing) two sounds together in unit 1. By week 10 they will have the tools to read over 100 words made up of 2-6 sounds. These words are carefully selected and follow the phonetic rules that emerging readers will encounter so there will be no need for guessing.
First 9 True Sight Words
True sight words must be taught in a completely different way than phonetically regular words. True sight words include ONLY those words which cannot be decoded in their entirety using typical phonetic patterns, in the order an emerging reader would encounter them. The student will learn to identify true sight words as "units with clues" and given strategies on how to learn them.

Upon completion of this packet, the student will be prepared to begin Lesson 1 in the full Learn Reading program and confidently approach more difficult reading!
